R&D LAB – SOLUTIONS

Driven by innovation. Proven by performance.

At Van Oossanen Naval Architects, research and development is not a side activity, it is a core driver of our work.

We invest over 20% of our time and resources into in-house R&D, continuously exploring new technologies, refining existing solutions and validating performance through advanced simulation and real-world application.

This structured approach to innovation allows us to translate theoretical insight into practical, high-impact solutions, delivering measurable improvements in efficiency, performance, comfort and sustainability.

Energy Saving & Efficiency

Maximum efficiency within fixed constraints.

Designing within fixed constraints, such as tonnage, power or operational profile, requires a precise balance between performance and efficiency.

We approach this challenge through advanced hull optimisation, resistance reduction and intelligent system integration. By refining every aspect of the vessel, we achieve lower fuel consumption, reduced emissions and improved operational efficiency.

This results in vessels that deliver more with less energy, without compromising comfort or reliability.

Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF)

Proven efficiency at all speeds.

Our patented Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF) is one of the most significant innovations in modern hull design.

Developed through extensive research and validated by independent testing, the FDHF combines the benefits of displacement and planing hulls, delivering superior efficiency, comfort and seakeeping at low, cruising and high speeds.

Compared to conventional hull forms, FDHF consistently demonstrates significantly lower resistance and improved performance across a wide range of operating conditions.

Key benefits:

  • Optimal efficiency at all speeds
  • Enhanced comfort and seakeeping
  • Broad applicability across vessel types

Fast Planing Hull Form (FPHF)

High-speed performance, redefined.

Designing high-speed vessels typically involves trade-offs between speed, comfort and efficiency. Our Fast Planing Hull Form (FPHF) eliminates these compromises.

By rethinking traditional hard-chine hull design, we deliver improved acceleration, reduced resistance and enhanced ride comfort, even at high speeds and in demanding sea conditions.

The FPHF is suitable for a wide range of applications and propulsion systems, making it a versatile solution for modern high-speed vessels.

Alternative Fuels & Propulsion

Future-ready vessel design.

The maritime industry is rapidly evolving towards low-emission and zero-emission propulsion systems, including methanol, hybrid and fully electric solutions.

We support this transition through continuous R&D and deep expertise in energy systems integration, hydrodynamics and operational analysis. Our approach ensures that alternative propulsion concepts are not only technically feasible, but also efficient and commercially viable.

In parallel, we develop and apply energy-saving technologies such as advanced hull forms, foiling systems and wake-modifying devices, further reducing environmental impact.

Backbone

As vessels continue to grow in size and speed, design complexity increases across multiple disciplines, from hydrodynamics to construction, safety, and operability.

In close collaboration with one of our customers, we addressed one of the most critical challenges in modern naval architecture: the rising longitudinal bending moments in long, high-speed vessels. The result is an innovative backbone construction method that enhances hull girder strength and stiffness without adding significant weight, seamlessly integrated into a refined, slender aluminium hull design.

Key benefits:

  • Enhanced structural strength and rigidity
  • No additional weight penalty
  • Improved safety and reliability

When performance, strength, and safety are paramount, we invite you to explore our advanced backbone design and construction methodologies.

POSEIDON

Data-driven design optimisation.

POSEIDON is our in-house developed, CFD-based design and optimisation platform.

It enables rapid evaluation and refinement of hull forms through parametric modelling and advanced hydrodynamic analysis. Resistance, propulsion characteristics and flow behaviour can be assessed early in the design process, allowing for fast and informed decision-making.

Integrated into our broader digital design environment, POSEIDON supports:

  • Systematic hull optimisation
  • Performance benchmarking
  • Workflow automation
  • Continuous knowledge development

The result is faster design cycles, higher accuracy and consistently optimised vessel performance.

Hull Vane®

Proven fuel savings. Measurable performance.

The patented Hull Vane® is a unique underwater appendage that transforms the vessel’s stern wave into useful forward thrust.

By reducing resistance and damping vessel motions, it significantly improves both efficiency and comfort. Depending on the vessel type and operating profile, fuel savings of 5–25% can be achieved.

Key benefits:

  • Reduced fuel consumption and emissions
  • Improved seakeeping and onboard comfort
  • Increased speed and operational efficiency

Foiling & Foil Assist

Stability, speed and efficiency combined.

Our foiling and foil assist technology introduces one or more hydrofoils to improve vessel behaviour and reduce power and energy requirements.

It improves seakeeping and enhances overall efficiency, resulting in a smoother, more controlled ride and lower operational loads.

Suitable for both new designs and retrofits, hydrofoils offer a practical solution to improve vessel performance.
